Matt Heckel joined 5 News in April of 2009. He currently co-anchors both the Daybreak and Midday shows. Matt graduated cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, earning a B.S. degree in Broadcasting.
Matt comes to the Mountain State from Raleigh, NC. While at UNC-Pembroke, Matt worked on the school's news show, Carolina News Today, for 4 years, doing everything from anchoring and reporting to producing and directing. During his time there, he earned the 2008 Outstanding Graduate in Broadcasting Award, as well as broadcasting scholarships from WBTW and Time Warner Cable.
Matt also interned at WNCN-TV in Raleigh. Matt currently lives in Clarksburg. When he's not reporting, Matt enjoys watching television (mostly news), drinking coffee, and cheering on the Carolina Hurricanes. He encourages you to send any story ideas or feedback to mheckel@wdtv.com .
