Phyllis Smith
Social/Digital Reporter
Phyllis joined the 5 News team in January of 2013. She has covered media events that have captured national attention, like the Elk River chemical spill in Charleston and the logging truck/train collision in Randolph County.
She grew up in Vienna, West Virginia and graduated Magna Cum Laude from West Virginia Wesleyan College with a degree in Communication Studies and a minor in English. During her time at Wesleyan, she was a reporter and writer for the school's newspaper and a disc jockey for the radio station C92FM.
In addition to interning at 5 News, Phyllis interned at her hometown's station, WTAP of Parkersburg. This is where she first got a taste of the exciting life a news reporter can have.
She enjoys living in Clarksburg and experiencing the surrounding counties of North Central West Virginia.
In her free time, Phyllis enjoys reading, swimming, dancing, cooking, and cheering on the Mountaineers! If you have a story idea you'd like to share with her, feel free to e-mail her at
