BARBOUR COUNTY, W.Va. (WDTV) -- The West Virginia Department of Transportation says the Division of Highways had to close the Carrollton Covered Bridge on County Route 36 after a fire damaged it Thursday night.
Officials say the fire was reported around 11:00 p.m. The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating the incident, which caused significant damage to the wooden structure covering the bridge.
“Along with playing a special role in West Virginia’s history, our covered bridges are among the most photographed landmarks in the state,” said Transportation Secretary Tom Smith. “The Division of Highways will thoroughly evaluate this structure, make necessary repairs to reopen the bridge to traffic, and assist in efforts to restore this historic landmark.”
Officials say the Division of Highways will take precautions to reduce trespassing and prevent vandalism as the bridge is being repaired.
