Fairmont teacher presented with prestigious honor

FAIRMONT, W.Va (WDTV) - One local teacher says she's honored and flattered to see her name on a special list from President Barack Obama.

Sarah Snyder is a math teacher at Fairmont Senior, and she was a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

In a press release, President Obama wrote:

"The recipients of this award are integral to ensuring our students are equipped with critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are vital to our Nation’s success,” President Obama said. “As the United States continues to lead the way in the innovation that is shaping our future, these excellent teachers are preparing students from all corners of the country with the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills that help keep us on the cutting-edge.”

For Snyder, she says she works for more than just a job.

"Being a teacher is a job that doesn't just require your time," Snyder said. "It requires your heart, and you have to have a passion for what you're doing."

Snyder also went in-depth on how she was nominated. To hear that, you can listen to the video above.
