Kate's Corner: Fireworks in a jar

BRIDGEPORT, W. Va (WDTV) - Fourth of July is just around the corner and when we think about the 4th, fireworks may come to mind for a lot of us. In this Kate's Corner, we are firing off fireworks in a jar.

What you'll need:
- A jar or glass of warm water
- A small glass, lid, or bowl
- Vegetable oil
- Food coloring
- A fork

In your small glass, pour a tablespoon or so of vegetable oil. add some drops of food coloring in to it. Gently mix it up with your fork.

Slowly pour your oil mixture into your jar of warm water. Sit back and watch!

The three mix together and create a look like fireworks.

What's happening here?

Well the food coloring does not dissolve in the oil but it will in the water. So when you pour the oil into the water, the food coloring is less dense than the oil so it sinks below it. Once it sink below the oil, it hits the water and starts to mix with it creating the explosion effect.
