Kate's Corner: Floating egg experiment

BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. (WDTV) - In this edition of Kate's Corner, we are going to try to make an egg float in water.

You want to have two glasses of just regular tap water, two eggs, and some salt.

First, let's try floating an egg in just regular tap water. It sinks.

So, how can we get the egg to float? Let's try adding some salt to the other water. Pour a lot in and stir it up. Now let's add the egg.

So why does the egg sink in the tap water but float in the salt water? Well, that all has to do with density. Density measures the amount of matter in a specific space or volume. The egg is denser than the tap water so it sinks. However, when you add the salt in the water, you are adding more particles into the space and increasing the density. The density of the water is then greater than the density of the egg so it floats.

This also explains why it is easier to float in the ocean than it is in a pool thanks to the salt water.
