Kate's Corner: Floating ball

BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. (WDTV) - In this edition of Kate's Corner, we are going to make a ping pong ball levitate in midair.

Here's what you'll need:
- A ping pong ball
- A blowdryer
-If you don't have any ping pong balls, you can crumble up a small piece of paper

This experiment is very simple. All you have to do is turn on your blow dryer and place the ping pong ball in the center of it.

You'll see the ball wiggle and float. The stronger the blow dryer, the higher the ball will float.

So is this magic? No. It's science.

Bernoulli's Principle explains this experiment as well as who heavy things like airplanes are allowed to fly in the sky.

The faster the air flows over a surface, the less the air pushes on that surface. This creates a lower air pressure on that object or in this care, the ping pong ball.

You may notice your ball wiggle and wobble. That is the ball attempting to leave the area of low pressure. The high pressure surrounding the ball though forces it back into the area of low pressure.
