BRIDGEPORT, W. Va (WDTV) - We are in the dog days of summer. The afternoons are hot and humid so why not cool down with some ice cold water? What if I told you that you could freeze a bottle of water in an instant? That's what we are going to do in this Kate's Corner.
Here's what you'll need:
- A bottle of water
- A freezer
Take a plastic bottle of water a place it in the freezer. Depending on your freezer, you'll want to leave it in there around an hour or up to three. If you start to see crystals forming on your bottle, it was in there too long and you'll need to start over.
After your set time, take out your bottle carefully. To instantly freeze it, slam it on the table or give it a nice hit.
You'll see the water instantly from where you hit it and out.
What happened here?
Well, you supercooled the water past the freezing point but didn't yet change it from a liquid to a solid.
For the ice crystals to form, it needs an imperfection. By hitting or slamming the bottle, you created that nucleation site and the ice quickly forms until your bottle is completely frozen.
