Kate's Corner: Grow the Grinch's heart

BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. (WDTV) - During the Christmas season, I usually have How the Grinch Stole Christmas movie on repeat. So of course I had to incorporate the Grinch into a science experiment. So using science, we are going to grow the Grinch's heart.

What you'll need is a green balloon, red or pink sharpie, plastic bottle, funnel, baking soda and vinegar.

Before you start the experiment, you'll need to take your sharpie and draw the Grinch's heart on your balloon. Once the heart dries, take your bottle and put some vinegar inside. Next, use your funnel to pour baking soda into the balloon. Carefully take your balloon and put it around the opening of your bottle. Be careful to not let any baking soda get into the bottle just yet.

When you're ready to grow the heart, place the balloon up and let the baking soda fall into the bottle. The Grinch's heart begins to grow. The heart doesn't grow because of Christmas spirit but instead because of science. The baking soda and vinegar create a chemical reaction. A product of this reaction is carbon dioxide which inflates your balloon.
