Kate's Corner: Skittles swirl

BRIDGEPORT, W. Va (WDTV) - You may have seen this experiment circulating the web already but now it's our turn to try it out.. It's the skittle rainbow.

All you need is a plate, warm water and of course, some skittles.

I have set up my skittles around the edge of the plate. You can use as many or as few skittles as you want. Then all you have to do it pour the water and watch.

Skittles are made up of different dyes and sugars. Adding the water dissolves those dyes and sugars but why don't the colors mix?

Well, all the different colors have different amounts of sugars and dyes in them so they have different amount of density. They don't mix due to something called water stratification. That is when water displays different properties such as density, temperature, salinity, and oxygenation. The layers act as barriers that prevent the water from mixing.

A simple experiment with beautiful results.
