Kate's Corner: Soda can jump

By  |

BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. (WDTV) - This edition of Kate's Corner is an experiment called the Soda Can Jump.

All you need is two coffee mugs and an empty soda can. Put the empty soda can into one of the mugs and blow. The can jumps out. Try to get your can into the other mug.

Why does this happen? It's all thanks to our friend air pressure. The can is very light so it's easy to move. When you blow air between the can and the mug, an area of high-pressure forms between the bottom of the can and the mug. The harder you blow the faster the air pressure between the two increases. The differences in pressure push the can out like a jump. You can even make it in a game with your friend and see who can get the most points or who can make the can jump the furthest.
