Kate's Corner: Unpoppable balloon

BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. (WDTV) - Have you ever had a balloon pop when it was too close to a light? Is there a way to have that balloon not pop? We are going to answer that question in this Kate's Corner.

Here's what you'll need:
- A balloon filled with just air
- A balloon filled with air and a little bit of water
- A candle
- A lighter
- Adult supervision

First, with an adult's help, light your candle.

Take you balloon with just air and see how close you can get it close to the flame. You'll notice that within just a few seconds the balloon pops.

Now let's try the balloon with some water in it. How close can you get this balloon to the flame? You'll notice you can get all the way to the candle. You can get so close that the flame is touching the balloon and still not popping.

Why is this? Well, the water is great at absorbing the heat. So the flame is heating up the water and not the air. In just the air balloon, the air is being heated up and the molecules are moving faster and faster. The air is expanding and then it pops!

In the balloon with air and water, the water is being slowly heated up and not the air so the balloon doesn't pop.
