Kate's Corner: Vortex cannon

By  |

BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. (WDTV) - The goal of this Kate's Corner is to knock down a stack of cups by just hitting a box.

We are going to do this by making a vortex cannon.

Here's what you'll need:
- A box
- Tape
- A knife or box cutter
- A adult supervision
- Cups.

First, tape all openings of your box so that it is completely sealed up.

Then cut a hole out of the box with the help of an adult.

Now it is finally time to knock over these cups. Once you're ready, point the hole in the box at the cups and hit the box. There go the cups.

So what's happening here? Well, this is a vortex cannon. This is using the changes in pressure to produce a doughnut circular vortex of air. This is also a great example of Boyle's Law in practice.

Boyle's Law states For a fixed amount of an ideal gas kept at a fixed temperature, pressure and volume are inversely proportional. The box's volume decreases when you hit it so the pressure increases and escapes through the hole in one vortex of air and hit the cups.

If you put any smoke or fog inside the box and repeat the experiment, you'll be able to see the vortex moving towards the cups.
