MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) - Thousands turned their tassels from right to left this past weekend as part of WVU's graduation ceremonies.
Part of that crowd was a mother and daughter both earning their degrees together on the same day.
"I was absolutely ecstatic," said Jordin Wilcher, the daughter. "My mom's my best friend, so it just made it so much more special that she was going to get to graduate with me."
They're not only mother and daughter, but they're also best friends. This past weekend, they were even more -- they were classmates and both graduates of WVU's Class of 2018. For Miley, WVU has always held a special place in her heart.
"I always wanted to go to WVU," Miley said. "A lot of people have these big dreams of maybe outside schools but as a young girl graduating from Buckhannon-Upshur, I wanted to go to WVU but we just didn't have the money."
Heading into this past spring semester, Miley was a few courses short of her Bachelor's, but it didn't take long to figure out her next steps.
"Having a kid that had done it, I was like this is so weird, but I was the one always registering her at schools and stuff," Miley said.
Looking back on the beginning of the semester, Miley admits it was almost like role reversal, where her daughter helped her get situated with a new and exciting chapter of her life.
"I helped her with her application, I made sure who her adviser was, I took her to her first advising appointment," Wilcher said.
As the two look back on this past weekend, Miley says this achievement wouldn't have been possible without the help and guidance of her daughter.
"Going into where we were lining up to walk, I don't know if I would have had to the guts to do it if she hadn't been with me," Miley said.
Perhaps the best part of all...
"Just that moment of singing Country Roads on the Coliseum floor, especially with my daughter, was just a moment that nobody could take away," Miley said.
