UPDATE: Identities released of suspect, victim in murder/suicide

The identities of a man and woman dead after an alleged murder/suicide in Smithburg have been released.

According to the Doddridge County Sheriff's Department, 63-year-old Richard Barnard allegedly murdered his wife, 50-year-old Lisa Barnard, near her place of work in Smithburg before committing suicide in Ritchie County.

The Sheriff's Department believes the crime was the result of a "domestic dispute," but would not elaborate further at this time. Investigators say the incident may have been premeditated.

Two people are dead following a shooting and connected suicide, according to police in Doddridge County.

According to the Doddridge County Sheriff's Department, they were called to the Smithburg area around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, for an active shooting situation. When they got on scene, they found a woman with multiple gunshot wounds. She passed away.

The suspect took off towards Route 50. Police caught up to that suspect in Ritchie County following a pursuit. That's when, police say, the suspect committed suicide.

No other information is being released at this time.

The Doddridge County Sheriff's Department and the West Virginia State Police are on the scene in Smithburg. The Ritchie County Sheriff's Department, members of the Doddridge County Sheriff's Department and State Police were at the scene in Ritchie County. The Doddridge County Ambulance Authority and Ritchie County EMS were also at the scenes.
