Probable Cause found in Lumberport murder hearing

A Harrison County Magistrate found probable cause in a preliminary hearing for 33-year-old Melissa Anne McAtee, who is accused of murdering 36-year-old David Cottrill in Lumberport on January 11.

During the hearing, Dolores Cottrill, David Cottrill's mother, was called to the stand. Cottrill was in the home with the couple's children when the shooting happened. She testified that Melissa had gotten out a gun and then went into another room. She heard McAtee curse at Cottrill and a gunshot go off. She also stated McAtee then threw the gun to the floor and stated she had killed him.

An official from the Harrison County Sheriff's Office also testified that Dolores Cottrill, David Cottrill, McAtee and the children were discovered in the home when law enforcement arrived. The official stated that Cottrill had received a single gunshot wound, and that toxicology reports had not come back yet.

The case now goes to circuit court.
