Two deaths being reviewed at WV correctional facilities

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WDTV) -- State officials announced they are reviewing two unrelated deaths that occurred Monday at correctional facilities in West Virginia.

35-year-old Philip D. Casto was found unresponsive in his cell during an early morning headcount at the Mount Olive Correctional Complex in Fayette County and pronounced dead not long after. Casto was sentenced to life in prison without mercy after he was convicted in the first-degree murder of Jennifer Evans in her Hurricane, WV home in 2015. He was captured in Massachusetts after the murder. Casto’s cause of death is suspected to be suicide.

In an unrelated incident, 48-year-old Denna Ruth McDonald died after an apparent medical episode in the booking area of Western Regional Jail in Cabell County. Officials say staff performed medical attention during the episode and emergency medical personnel were called to the scene. McDonald was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Due to medical privacy issues and the reviewing of the two deaths, no further information is expected to be released at this time.
