Two men sentenced for staging accidents, filing false insurance claims

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WDTV) -- Two local men have been sentenced after filing false insurance claims after staging vehicle accidents.

55-year-old Dallas Lewis of Clarksburg pled guilty to Conspiracy to Commit Mail Fraud in May. Lewis admitted to conspiring with others to file false insurance claims after staged vehicle accidents and getting a portion of the settlement. He has been sentenced to 7 years and 8 months in prison. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the accidents occurred from 2012 to 2014 and took place in Harrison, Monongalia and Taylor Counties.

34-year-old Charles Bonner of Morgantown admitted faking injuries from a staged 2012 accident in Harrison County, and filing a false insurance claim that brought around $101,500 to himself and others. He also said he had a role in getting a settlement check for $46,500 that had been sent to someone else. Bonner was sentenced to 2 years and 3 months for Mail Fraud.

Both were also ordered to pay restitution, with Lewis paying $290,000 and Bonner paying $152,000.
