BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. (WDTV)- The frigid winter weather and flu season have caused blood collections to drop these past few months. On Wednesday, UHC held a blood drive trying to up the donations.
Central Blood Bank held the drive in connection with UHC. This was to restock blood supplies, that are needed in the hospital. According to health experts, 38 percent of the population is eligible to donate blood yet only 10 percent actually does. The lead technician at the hospital says blood transfusions are done every day and the constant need for blood is urgent to help patients.
"We see the need everyday. Multiple transfusions a day of multiple blood components that can be made from a blood donation," said Ralph Johns, a lab technician.
Blood drives are held every first Wednesday of the month at UHC.
