WV Democratic Party responds to 4 percent raise

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WDTV)-- The WV Democratic Party released the following statement regarding the Senate Finance Committee's decision:

After teachers, school service personnel, and students have endured a week of name-calling, door closing, and disrespect by Republican leadership, Republicans in the Senate Finance Committee just slashed their pay raise by 1% for political games.

Democrats in Senate Finance Committee echoed each other when saying that this is nothing more than an attempt by Republican leadership to divide West Virginia workers for political gain and further delay of getting our teachers back to the classroom with a pay raise that they deserve.

"As if we had any doubt that the delay was purely political game playing by the Republicans now we know for sure it was just that and Republican leadership should be ashamed of themselves," said Belinda Biafore WVDP Chairwoman. "As sad as it is, Republicans in the statehouse do not care about the people of West Virginia. They are not fooling anyone."

Republicans in Senate Finance also took turns taking cheap shots at their leader, Governor Justice for the 5% pay raise.

"Our teachers have endured the ugliest disrespect from their Republican leaders and just when they had fought so hard to get what they deserve and step in the right direction back to the classroom, Republican leaders said no. They have no interest or will to invest in the people of West Virginia. It's all politics for them. This is chaos and the people of West Virginia deserve better."

GOP Senator Boso's amendment that slashes the pay raise by 1% passed 9-8, all Democrats voting against the decrease and now the bill with amendment goes to Senate floor.
