BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WDTV)-- 'I think it is cold out here. The roads are not good"
That's the reaction several of you had after dealing with the snow, ice, and sleet. The Monday morning mess lingered into the afternoon creating traffic nightmares for many drivers.
Many of you said certain areas were especially slick and icy. Even if a road might look clear, it could still be covered in black ice.
"People don't pay attention and they travel faster than what they should," said Clarksburg resident.
First responders said drivers need to pay attention when heading out.
"With the weather changing as quickly as it has the last couple of days, give yourself a little more time and definitely more following distance. The roads can be slick in spots and you may not notice it. If you are following too closely, it's very easy to rear end somebody and get caught up in an accident," said Lt. Walter Knight, Clarksburg Fire Department.
If you hit black ice, do not hit the brakes. Lift your foot off of the accelerator and keep your steering wheel straight.
"With the conditions we have today between the rain, freezing rain, snow, sleet, black ice is quite a possibility. Bridges and overpasses will freeze up quicker due to the cold air underneath them. Black ice will sneak up on you if you are not careful," said Knight.
If you do have to venture out, take it slow and stay alert.
