Woman dead after apparent drowning at Cheat Lake

A woman is dead after an apparent drowning at Cheat Lake.

According to the Monongalia County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to a possible drowning at around 11:40 Sunday night.

The office says a woman was reported missing from the party she was with, and was later found by a family member by the docks near a restaurant located on Chateau Road.

Officials say CPR was performed on the woman, identified as 68-year-old Diana Poland of Fort Ashby, but she passed away.

Poland was reportedly boating with her husband and a friend earlier in the day. Officials say it is possible she was trying to get onto the boat and fell into the water.

Cheat Lake VFD, Mon EMS, and the WVU Health Team responded to the scene. The case is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Mon County Sheriff's Office at 304-291-7218 and ask for Detective Currie.
