Black Bears allow 7 in 9th, fall to Mahoning Valley 7-2

GRANVILLE, W.VA (WDTV) - (Black Bears game release):

GRANVILLE, WV – The West Virginia Black Bears were defeated 7-2 by the Mahoning Valley Scrappers Monday night. The Black Bears held a 2-0 lead going into the ninth inning before giving up seven straight runs.

Scooter Hightower was the star of the show for the Black Bears before the ninth inning collapse. Hightower tossed eight scoreless innings and struck out eight Scrapper batters in his outing.

Julio De La Cruz put the Black Bears on the scoreboard in the second inning with an RBI double to left fielder. Lucas Tancas drove in Tristan Gray with a line drive single to center to give the Black Bears a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

After a stellar eight inning outing, Joel Cesar came in the relieve Scooter Hightower in the top of the ninth inning. After loading the bases, Cesar walked in a run to give the Scrappers their first run. Hector Garcia came in to relieve Cesar with the bases still loaded in the top of the ninth. Garcia hit a batter and walked in a run to the Scrappers a 3-2 edge. With the bases loaded again, Oscar Gonzalez cleared the bases with a double to left field. The Scrappers piled on their final run of the night when Austin Wade knocked in a run with an RBI single.

The Black Bears (34-25) will begin a six-game road trip tomorrow. West Virginia will travel to State College to take on the Spikes (30-29) tomorrow at 7:05 PM at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
