Hightower tosses 7 scoreless, Black Bears beat State College 5-1

GRANVILLE, W.VA (WDTV) - (Black Bears game release):

GRANVILLE, WV – The West Virginia Black Bears won 5-1 over the State College Spikes in the first game after the All-Star break. Black Bears’ second baseman Tristan Gray went 2-2 with a home run and two RBIs and was named the 2017 NYPL All-Star Game MVP as the South defeated the North 5-2.

Scooter Hightower tossed seven scoreless innings, only allowing four hits in the Black Bears win Wednesday night. Spikes’ starting pitcher Johan Oviedo had a no hitter going into the fifth inning until Sandy Santos broke it up with a solo home run to left centerfield.

The Black Bears found their way on the scoreboard again in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jared Oliva doubled and reached home after the Spikes committed consecutive throwing errors. Lucas Tancas slammed a solo home run in the following at-bat. Santos tripled to left field and was brought home by Julio De La Cruz to give the Black Bears a 4-0 lead.

The Spikes got a run back in the top of the eighth but the Black Bears answered it with an RBI triple by Jared Oliva. Hightower improved his perfect record to (3-0) in Wednesday’s 5-1 win.

The Black Bears (32-22) will take on the Spikes (29-25) again tomorrow night at 7:05 PM at Monongalia County Ballpark.
