Monster Mash Demolition Derby

A Monster Mash Demolition Derby will be held Saturday, October 21 at the Paw Paw Fairgrounds. Registration is at 1 p.m.; derby starts at 6 p.m. Trunk-or-treat will be held at 5 p.m., followed by kids Power Wheel Derby at 5:30 p.m. $50 will be awarded for the best decorated car. Entry fee for adults is $25. Pits $10. Admission price is $8.

October Old-Time Week, hosted by the Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College, will begin with a welcome jam session at 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15 in The Icehouse. A jam session led by Augusta Heritage Center Old-Time Week staff will take place at 8 p.m. Monday, October 16 in the Great Hall of Halliehurst on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. “From the Archives: Films of West Virginia’s Master Musicians,” a presentation by musician Kim Johnson, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 17 in Halliehurst on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. A concert featuring Augusta Heritage Center’s October Old-Time Week staff and the D&E Appalachian Ensemble will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, October 19 in Myles Center for the Arts Harper-McNeeley Auditorium. A Halloween Square Dance and Cakewalk to kick off Augusta Heritage Center’s Fiddlers’ Reunion weekend will take place at 8 p.m. Friday, October 20. The event will be in the Augusta Dance Pavilion, weather permitting, or in Myles Center for the Arts Creative Commons. General admission at the door is $7 for the public, $5 for students and AmeriCorps members, and free to the D&E community. October Old-Time Week staff will provide live music with round robin calling led by Lou Maiuri. A cakewalk fundraiser will benefit the Augusta scholarship program. Augusta Heritage Center’s Fiddlers’ Reunion will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 in Myles Center for the Arts. The event will feature free performances by West Virginia musicians. Visitors can also browse exhibits and instrument vendors, participate in jam sessions, shop in the Augusta store and visit The Stirrup Gallery. The day will conclude with a flatfoot dance contest. The 2017 West Virginians for Life Convention theme is "Life is for everyone." It will be held on Saturday, October 21, at Horizons Church, 8302 Mount Clare Road, Lost Creek, WV 26385. Because a variety of speakers and pro-life presentations will be offered in the same room, no one will miss a single workshop. In addition to National Right to Life Political Director Karen Cross and WVFL President Wanda Franz, Ph.D., other pro-life speakers will be sharing their expertise. West Virginians for Life is honored to have Wesley J. Smith, J.D. as convention keynote this year. Lawyer and award winning author, Smith is a Senior Fellow at the Discovery Institute’s Center on Human Exceptionalism. He is also a consultant to the Patients Rights Council, and as such, will be addressing the topic of physician assisted suicide.

Additionally there is a special day-long camp for the teens. This day camp will include fun games along with serious talks. Other than lunch, the teens will have their own convention separate from the adults in another area of the Horizons Church campus. Child care is available, but MUST be made known in advance.

Davis & Elkins Plans Fall Open House Sessions for Students

Elkins – Davis & Elkins College has set dates for Admission Open House sessions throughout the fall semester. The visits give prospective students and their families an opportunity to tour the beautiful 172-acre campus, and meet professors and Student Ambassadors.
The fall open house events will take place on Saturday, September 23 and Saturday, October 21 starting at 9 a.m. and Friday, December 8 starting at 1 p.m.
The exciting day will begin in historic Halliehurst Mansion. Throughout the day, prospective students and their families will have the opportunity to speak with members of the faculty and representatives from Athletics, Student Life, The Naylor Learning Center, Academic Affairs and Financial Planning. The day also will include a campus tour led by Student Ambassadors and lunch provided by College Dining Services.
Prospective students may also schedule private visits.

The festival is open to the community. Activities include hayrides, cakewalks, live music, games, bounce houses, bingo, basket raffles, basket auctions, concessions, face painting, fire safety demonstrations, and much more. Some items being raffled include a 55-inch 4K Ultra HD TV, a Fire tablet and case, Polar Express Train tickets, Disney World Tickets, a Tennessee trip with Dollywood and Ripley’s Aquarium tickets, a money tree, a LEGO basket, and much more.
