A proposed Trans-Allegheny Interstate Line running from Pennsylvania to Virginia might end up cutting through Marion and Taylor counties in an alternative route is chosen.

Residents and officials in Taylor County aren't pleased with the idea of the lines running through their area. In fact, last week, the county commission went on record opposing the route by a unanimous vote.

The alternative route, or the Grafton Area Route, was developed from a study by Allegheny Energy. The Consumer Advocate Division asked the Public Service Commission to require the study.

The original plan for the 500 kilo-volt power lines runs from Monongalia County into Preston County. The Grafton Area Route runs through Monongalia, Marion, Taylor, and Preston counties.

The newer path would displace at least one Taylor County resident and would put nearly 100 folks within 250 feet of the lines. The majority of the new lines would run parallel to already existing 500 kilo-volt lines.

The Grafton Area Route is longer than the original plan and would displace more folks and property.

County Commission President David Gobel says, The power company doesn't even want to pursue this alternative, because it is more costly and has a greater negative impact. I hope to PSC will approve the original proposed route. The poor folks in Taylor County shouldn't have to deal with the line coming through just because folks outside of Morgantown don't want it in their own backyards. We're taking a stand for the people of Taylor County."

The PSC will hold public hearings on the route later this year. Then they will ultimately decide which route is the most beneficial and best for everyone.

Residents with concerns are asked to speak out at the public hearings or to petition the PSC within 15 days from Monday.

Petitioners should include their name, address, the concerns, how the route would directly affect them, and what they would like to see happen. Letters should be sent to:
