It all started Sunday, when U-S Naval Academy student Matthew Sanders went reportedly missing.
On Monday, Morgantown Police find Sanders unharmed but he claims he was the victim of a kidnapping and extortion plot.
On Tuesday, police discover his story is a lie.
Sanders attends the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD and was visiting his girlfriend in Morgantown over the weekend. On Monday afternoon, police located Sander just outside of Morgantown in Preston County, around mile marker 16 on I-68 East, at the top of a runaway truck ramp.
Sanders claimed he was kidnapped, but later admitted to making it all up, saying he was having trouble at school and didn't want to return to the Naval Academy.
Police will talk to the Prosecutor's office to see if any criminal charges will be filed.
The Naval Academy released this statement, "The Naval Academy is cooperating with civilian authorities in this investigation. Since this is an ongoing investigation, it would not be appropriate to discuss the details of this case."
