Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Each year over 200 people die in the U.S. from Carbon Monoxide.  It is a colorless, odorless gas that replaces the oxygen in your blood and can cause suffocation from the inside out.

"Carbon Monoxide is something that's undetectable.  You need a detector to detect that.  Smoke you can see or smell.  Carbon Monoxide is undetectable," said Lowe's Store Manager Chuck Wright.

"The National Fire Protection Association recommends having 1 smoke detector near every bedroom.  They also recommend having a carbon monoxide detector for every floor.  To get the best bang for your buck, they actually make an item that combines both."

Since the winter storm on Friday, at least three people have died from Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

"A lot of people are reverting to gas, propane and electric with the generator to heat their homes.  Right now, because they're out of power.  So, you need to have a Carbon Monoxide detector just to keep your family safe," said Wright.

Even the Fire Chief has power out at his home and uses a generator to keep heat and some electricity.

"On generators-they're good tools, if they're used properly.  A generator is an internal combustion engine and it does produce Carbon Monoxide.  So, set them outside," said Chief David Fetty.

"Anything gas powered puts off a fume.  And any type of fume is harmful to your health.  So, never put a generator inside your home, always have it outside and go by the manufacturer's guidelines for each generator," said Wright.

"If you're continually waking up with a headache and you just don't feel well or you're flushed, you need to have a Carbon Monoxide checkout of your house," said Fetty.

If you think you have Carbon Monoxide poisoning, get fresh air immediately.  Open all windows and door and leave your house.  Call the fire department and report your symptoms and seek proper medical attention.
