Smoke Detector Check Up

Daylight Savings Time has begun, but setting the clocks an hour forward isn't the only thing to remember this weekend.

Local fire fighters want to remind citizens to check their home smoke detectors.

The National Fire Protection Agency said that 33% of homes in America are not protected by smoke detectors.

Normally, a smoke detector will last a lot longer than a year. But, firefighters say replacing the batteries annually is a good idea.

"It's probably the most important thing you could have in your house. It's very important, it's life or death," said Lt. Dave Whiteman of the Fairmont Fire Department.

Officials said having detectors in more populated rooms is the best policy. This includes rooms like the kitchen, living room and bedroom.
