Recent Boating Accident Has Officials Stressing Safety

As previously reported, two boats collided on the Tygart River, Saturday night.

Luckily, four people who were on the boat weren't injured, but Natural Resource Police did site the man in the other boat. Officials say the incident could have been a lot worse.

If you're going to ride your boat at night, it's mandatory to have lights on your boat and all passengers twelve years old and younger are required to wear life vests, unless the boat is drifting or docked.

Boating under the influence also carries a heavy penalty for boaters this summer.

"If convicted it's a mandatory 24 hours in jail in first offense. The only difference is you don't have a license that we can take like you do a motor vehicle," says Sgt. Bob Waybright, Natural Resource Police.

Natural Resource Police say they haven't seen too many boating accidents so far this summer, but they will step up patrol in different areas during the weekends.
