Smoking Ban Controversy Rages On

It's been almost two months since Harrison County banned all indoor smoking at public places throughout the county.

Since then, the ban has been surrounded by controversy. The Harrison County Fraternal and Service Association, Inc. has filed a lawsuit against the Harrison Clarksburg Board of Health in an effort to get their establishments exempt from the ban.

Overall in Harrison County, the revenue from video lottery machines is down from about $1.7 million in May, before the ban, to $1.4 million in June, after the ban was put in place.

Health board member, Bernie Fazzini suggested that they exempt stand alone bars and fraternal clubs from the ban. The board decided to go against that suggestion.

Clarksburg Mayor Margaret Bailey says board member Joyce Rabanal has agreed to talk to the fraternal organizations. James Purnell, with the Clarksburg VFW, says nobody from the board has reached out to make any contact with them so far.

Because of the lawsuit, Rabanal declined to comment on any questions relating to the fraternal organizations. But, she does say her position is clear; she's for the 100 percent ban, and it has always been the county's goal.
