Thanksgiving is over and some of us might still be full from stuffing ourselves with turkey dinners and all the fixings. But the holidays aren't over, with many family meals, Christmas cookies and News Years drinks to come, you could be packing on a few extra pounds. Studies show that most people gain 1-10 pounds during the holiday, but some proactive tips could help you keep off the weight.
Experts say hitting the gym could keep you from gaining weight. Extreme Fitness in Bridgeport offered some of the best ways to burn off that turkey dinner.
They say it all starts with cardio. "It doesn't take a whole lot. You don't have to run and go into full sweat and feel like you're dying," said Clinten Aragona, owner of Extreme Fitness. "You just need to do it for about 20 minutes, 3 times a week".
Aragona said picking a pace between a fast run and a slow walk is key to exercising without killing yourself. He said to save energy for resistance training, because that is how you keep a higher metabolism. "Just follow a little protocol of working each muscle. It doesn't have to be anything excessive," he said. "Just something simple, something consistent a few times a week".
Of course, the calories you need to burn in the gym come from those holiday treats, so experts say to be mindful of what you eat. For instance, once piece of pumpkin pie could take about 25 minutes on the stair master to burn off entirely.
But Aragona said time in the gym shouldn't scare you from a day of indulgence. He said it's all about being proactive. "I say it's ok to be able to have a day to just do what you want. They key thing is what you're doing 90% of the time," Aragona said. "It certainly would be proactive to exercise a little more during the holidays, because if you burn more calories, you will obviously be able to consume a little more and get away with it".
