Primetime Shootout Brings Big Bucks to Morgantown

p> This weekend put Morgantown on the map as a major basketball city. In addition to the WVU vs. Ohio State game, one of the nation's most prestigious high school basketball tournaments took place in the University City. That tournament also brought big bucks to Morgantown.

The 2010 Primetime Shootout brought hundreds of people from all over the nation to Morgantown for one of the country's top basketball tournaments. Coach Isaac Pitts and his Quality Education Academy Pioneers have made their way from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. "We play a national schedule," Pitts said. "We were contacted to play in this tournament, Primetime Shootout. So we wanted to bring the guys. We play all over the country, and this is a great venue."

Officials said the tournament has the potential to make a wave in Morgantown's economy. "We're expecting over 300, just counting the high school kids, that are in town," said Peggy Myers-Smith, the Executive Director of the Greater Morgantown Convention and Visitors Bureau. "So we're looking at over 300 hotel rooms being utilized. And of course, the West Virginia teams are bringing local fans. We have some teams from southwestern Pennsylvania and Maryland that are also bringing fans."

Myers-Smith said she alerted area businesses about the tournament so they could prepare for the crowds. She said the tournament means big bucks for the community. "Not only do we try to put folks in hotels, we want folks to go spend money in the restaurants," she explained. "We want them to go shopping. We want them to gas their cars up to go home. And all in all it goes together, and we're looking at potentially $500,000 in economic impact to the community."

This is the first year that the Primetime Shootout took place in West Virginia. Organizers said that with this year's success, they hope to make Morgantown it's location in the future.

As for Coach Pitts and his Pioneers, he said he was very pleased with Morgantown's hospitality. "We've enjoyed our stay here," he said. "It's been great, and we've been treated great."

If the tournament continues to stay in Morgantown, officials predict it's growth could eventually mean millions of dollars for Morgantown.
