Winter Clothes Tips

Finding the right clothes for the winter is crucial, whether you are shoveling the driveway or sledding down a hill.

The first rule is to cover all extremities, such as your hands, ears and feet. Keeping these areas warm promotes good blood flow.

Doctors say the best way to stay warm is to dress in layers.

The first layer should be a wicker layer that is some type of synthetic fiber that dries sweat and moisture quickly.

The second layer should be an insulating layer, like a fleece. Preferably not made from cotton, because cotton retains moisture.

The third layer should be your protection layer. This is normally a jacket that protects against wind and water.

But one article of clothing that should never be layered is your socks.

"The common mistake that people make is putting too many socks on. And that actually decreases the circulation in your feet. So just one good pair of socks would be great," says Bridgeport Express Doctor Natalie King. "And then if you have a boot that is water proof or water resistant, then that would help as well."

Finally, doctors say to try and limit extended outside time to 30 minute intervals.
