Re: phones/text. These methods are simply an additional meduim to bring us closer to our children, and don't replace traditional communication. A text shares the excitement of the moment (i.e. I made the team) and is enough to hold me over until we're together. It is our responsibility to teach our children suitable phone etiquette; if used properly, it will simply bring the active family closer together.
