More than 100 spectators and racers witnessed the start of many mud bog races held by the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum.

The races were held on a hillside behind the old Weston State Hospital.

About two months ago, the Department of Environmental Protection issued a permit to the owners of the land after a successful test run.

The bog is basically a mud pit dug a couple feet into the ground and extends about a couple hundred feet in length.

Bryan Totten, who competed in the race said it was a good turnout for a first time, and even though he admits there was some confusion for a first time event, he looks forward to racing his Blue Cyclone there in the future.

Mud bog races will be held continuously for the remainder of the year on alternating Saturdays.
