After 36 years of service Grafton's Fire Chief is hanging up his helmet. Chief Wayne Beall says he's enjoyed every minute of the job, but it's time to try something new and spend time with his family.

Chief Beall's dad was a firefighter and he'd go out with him on calls. He says it's always been in his blood since then. He started as a junior firefighter in 1972 and continued as a volunteer and paid firefighter and has now been the chief and building inspector for 10 years.

During his time, he's accomplished alot. He's worked to get grants for new trucks, equipment, and a fire safety house.

And folks at the city say he's just a great guy to work with.

City manager Kevin Stead says he's going to be a hard man to replace. He says Chief Beall's great at promoting the department, recruiting members, and working with the public.

But the process of naming a new chief has already started. They're conducting interviews now and hope to name a new chief next week.

Chief Beall says he hopes the new chief continues to improve the department and keeps up the camaraderie with the other emergency agencies.

He also wants to thank all the agencies in the county and city for their continued help and support.

He officially retires as chief next Tuesday, after serving as the co-parade marshal in Monday's 141st Memorial Day Parade. Beall will serve as the city's building inspector for a little while longer, while he continues to look for a new job venture.
