The Monongalia County Board of Health held a meeting Thursday morning to discuss a proposed smoking ban for the county.

More than 100 people showed up to share their opinions both for and against the proposal that would ban smoking in all public areas including restaurants and bars. Bar owners and smokers say they should have the choice to smoke wherever they choose. Folks against the ban say they don't want to be subjected to the health effects of secondhand smoke.

The board went over just a portion of the 3,000 comments submitted by the public. Of those comments, 60% were against the ban and 40% for the measure.

The smoke isn't expected to clear anytime soon, as the board did not take a vote on the proposal. Some members feel the terms of the ban are too "ambiguous." They plan to meet again to go over the specific terms of the proposal over the next couple months.
