Sheriff's Deputies in Upshur County are kicking off their Project Lifesaver program Monday.

Just about a month ago, the Sheriff's Department in Upshur and Tucker Counties were trained on how the program works. Monday they're accepting applications for folks interested in the project.

Sheriff Virgil Miller says they've already had a number of folks come into the department Monday to apply for the bracelets. The program helps folks with alzheimers. autism, down syndrome or any other cognitive disabilities causing the potential to wander. Folks eligible for the program wear a radio transmitter bracelet which cost around $300. In the event the person wanders away, the search and rescue time is cut dramatically from hours, to minutes.

The Upshur County Sheriff's Department has received a lot of support from different organizations in the community. The Lions Club alone has donated five bracelets.

If anyone is interested in a bracelet, you can call the Upshur County Sheriff's Department at 472-1180 or Joy Layfield at 472-0780.
