The Tygart Valley Drug and Violent Crime Unit, made up for the Taylor County Sheriff's Department, the Grafton Police Department, and the Prosecuting Attorney's Office, confiscates a lot of drugs and paraphernalia throughout a year, even though they're only a part-time unit. But they can't keep the evidence around forever.
It's spring cleaning time at the Taylor County Sheriff's Department and Grafton Police Department.
They cleaned out their evidence closets of drugs and other paraphernalia collected over the past year or two.
About $200,000 worth of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, meth, and pills went up in smoke Wednesday afternoon.
But it takes time before it can be destroyed. They have to make sure to preserve all the evidence while the case is still working through the court system.
After the cases are completely processed through the court system, they get a destruction order from the judge, they pile it up, and the match is lit, as the officers continue to protect everyone in Taylor County.
Sheriff Robert Beltner says this is the perfect way to get rid of the drugs to keep them off the streets and out of the hands of kids in Taylor County.
They also destroy the confiscated guns and knives by cutting them up and torching them.
