Protecting Yourself from Heat Stroke and Exposure

By Steve Butera

Temperatures are rapidly hitting the 90's and 100's over the past few days in our area. So, experts are reminding people to be careful of heat exposure and possibly heat stroke.

Heat stroke is a form of hypothermia, according to the website MedicineNet. Heat exposure is caused by prolonged exposure to the sun or high temperatures. This in turn can lead to a heat stroke, which requires immediate attention by a doctor. Body temperatures can reach up to 106 degrees at that point, which can be fatal.

Doctor Jaime Miller from Medbrook Medical Associates in Bridgeport says putting cold compresses and hydration are the two best things people can do to prevent this problem if people become overheated.

The following are signs of a possible heat stroke:
-Nausea
-Fatigue
-Absence of sweat or perspiration
-Hallucinations
-Difficulty breathing
-Vomiting
-Headaches
-Confusion
-Seizures
-Rapid pulse
