Weston Home Exposed to Mercury

WDTV News

A mercury scare in Weston sends two toddlers to the hospital and causes a home to become unlivable.

WVDEP Resource Specialist Bob Sattler says a two year old child found a bottle of mercury and spilled it onto their wooden floor and that's when they decided to send both of their children to Stonewall Jackson Hospital for blood work.

The incident actually happened a week ago at a home on Broad Street.

Officials say the family got it up to code and they were starting to move in when the child found a half pound of mercury.

Four people including another four year old were in the home over night and Sattler says it could cause some short term damage.

DEP crews went inside the home and vacuumed what they could while Weston Building Inspector John Hogan deemed it uninhabitable for a second time.

They're not sure where the bottle of mercury came from.
