The West Virginia Industrial Home for Youth is taking the proactive approach to safety.

In Salem Monday morning they held a disaster mock drill.

Not only did law enforcement agencies come to together but fire and EMS crews battled some serious situations.

They didn't waste anytime, the drills started out as a gas line explosion causing them to evacuate injured workers.

Then they practiced finding four escapees who took a man as a hostage, that's where the swat team came into his rescue.

Superintendent Joe Merendino says, there has been escaped juveniles in the past so he wants to make sure these drills become a number one priority at least once a year.
