Members are calling the move "appalling," but come next July, PEIA insurance premiums may be going up again.

Educators representing the West Virgina Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers West Virginia spoke out against the move at a forum held in Morgantown Thursday evening.

The proposal would increase premiums by 9% for active employees and 11% for retirees.

Teachers call the move an insult at a time when the state has a budget surplus and the economy is in decline.

PEIA representatives declined to comment, saying their only goal for the meeting was to listen.

In total, eight similar forums will be held in the state.

The proposal must be voted on by the PEIA Finance Board and then signed by the Governor.
