Fairmont Police hope a new take-home cruiser program will help the department retain officers.

At a city council meeting Tuesday a policy resolution was adopted that will help regulate the city's new voluntary program.

Police Chief Mark Hayes says the program will keep more officers on the road and help increase their presence in many neighborhoods.

Hayes says that right now about two-thirds of the force are assigned their own vehicles and are expected to participate in the program.

The purpose of the policy passed by council Tuesday was to, in part, limit the use of the cruisers for personal use.

Chief Hayes hopes to begin the program immediately.
