Nobody likes catching a cold, and often times they are tough to avoid. But medical experts say keeping away from sick people and frequently washing your hands can help keep the cold away.

Dr. Jason Misenhelder, Medical Director of Urgent Care at Healthplex, said getting enough sleep, eating right and exercise are good things to practice if you want to have a strong immune system.

But if you happen to catch a cold, taking over-the-counter medicines can help hide the symptoms. Dr. Misenhelder also recommends drinking plenty of fluids and practicing "conservative care", which is plenty of sleep, eating right and moderate exercise.

Colds that last longer than 7 or 8 days can sometimes mean something more serious. If your cold lasts that long, call your doctor.

Dr. Misenhelder also said if you have a cold, you should keep those around you in mind. If you must go to work or go to public places, you should cover your mouth when you cough and always wash your hands after.
