With the current state of the economy, studies show that one in ten people are afraid that they will become a victim of property crime. The number of burglaries and robberies have risen across the country partly because of the economic crisis.

While it's more prominent in other states it still is a problem here.

State police say it doesn't matter if it's spring, summer, winter or fall, property crimes are common.

But there are things you can do to protect yourself. First and foremost, use common sense. Make sure to lock the windows and doors to your home, as well as your car.  Another thing to keep in mind is to keep lights on outside of your home because it can keep criminals away, and you can even install motion detectors.  When you're in your car...don't leave keys inside and park in a well lit area.

If you fall victim to a property crime, call you local police as soon as possible.
