The United States Fire Administration says this past holiday season has been one of the deadliest for residential fires in recent memory. Since Thanksgiving there have been more than 158-fatal fires in the states, resulting in over 200-fire fatalities.

Fire officials believe smoke alarms could have prevented this number from being so high. That's why Wednesday they're calling for everyone to install, maintain and test their smoke alarms.

In the event of a fire, a properly installed and maintained smoke alarm can save you life and provide an early warning signal so you and your family can escape.

Every house should have a smoke alarm in every room. Make sure you test the alarm at least once a month and replace batteries annually. It's also a good idea to practice a fire excape plan with your family.
