CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - With neighboring Maryland about to become the sixth state in six years to abolish the death penalty, one West Virginia delegate is on a quixotic quest to resume executions in his state for the first time in a half-century.

This year marks the 27th in a row that Republican Del. John Overington has introduced a bill to reinstate capital punishment. It has rarely progressed far and is unlikely to pass this year, even with the minority GOP steadily making gains in the legislature.

Overington said he supports capital punishment because it leads to a fairer society. He also fears that without it, West Virginia could be inviting murderers to the state. He said his constituents support capital punishment.

If he's unsuccessful, Overington will try for a 28th time next year.

LOL. Bwhahaha..I can't help laughing at college-educated individuals with liberal backgrounds. You went to college and don't understand the 'concept' of "reputable" information? Uh, your "source" of information must be as close to the original for 'real' facts and truth. Uh, wiki isn't "credible" and neither is "huff post" and other 'biased' individual liberal's websites. OMG! I know folks with less education in liberal schools with MORE knowledge and education. Libs make me smile. So funny.

This "liberal college student" took your advise. I looked up statistics on the internet. Though, I knew I hadn't been lied to in college considering I looked it up then convinced I was wrong. All statistics show that states WITHOUT death penalty have lower crime & murder rates. I guess now you'll say that all of these websites are propaganda by liberalists.

It's a shame college students believe whatever liberal professors tell them rather than checking it out for themselves. An intelligent person would go to govt's own websites and 'see' for themselves that states WITH capital punishment have LESS crime than those who do not have it available.

Stupidity says executing murderers and rapists doesn't stop them from committing the crimes again. Intelligence and common sense "proves" if we execute them and put them in the ground they are 'dead' and dead murderers/rapists do not murder or rape again. It seems the more liberal college educated one is today....the less common sense they have. Someone can spout lies all day long but intelligent people can never be deceived or lied to because we check out their comments and they are false. Real question is; why do liberals NOT want to protect children from rapists and murderers? Instead, they protect criminals.

This is a horrible idea. I used to support the death penalty until I went to college & learned that states that have the death penalty have higher rates of unspeakable crimes (ie serial killers). It's a game to them & the stakes are higher when the death penalty is on the table. Look at Texas. They are the toughest state in the US for criminals & they have serial killers & crimes alot worse than anything WV has ever seen. Look at the statistics. Plus, there are people all the time who come to find out are innocent & are freed but we can't free them if we've already executed them.

Keep trying. It should NEVER have been abolished. It's why crime is getting so bad here. Rapists and murderers should be executed!
