Morgantown authorities are investigating seven street fires that were set after the West Virginia vs. Baylor football game Saturday.
They happened on Cass Street, Spruce Street, Grant Avenue and Jones Avenue. Police said one fire spread to three parked vehicles and destroyed them. That fire also caused about $1,000 in heat damage to the exterior of a house. The vehicle damage totaled an estimated $35,000. All seven fires happened late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
WVU students and their friends regularly start bonfires to celebrate everything from a major sports victory, to the end of a semester. WVU beat Baylor 70-63 Saturday, in its Big 12 debut.
The university has joined police in cracking down on fire-starters. During the last school year, at least 10 students were expelled.
Anyone with information about these fires should call the Morgantown Arson Tip-line at (304) 225-3586.
Early Sunday morning in Morgantown there were multiple street fires. Police said all of these fires were without a doubt arson.
Police said one piece of furniture was caught on fire that was leaning up against a vehicle. That car then caught on fire and extended to two other vehicles that were parked near it. There were no injuries but all three vehicles were totaled.
Police said there were two other fires in the area, one just a few yards away, while the other was a mattress behind a nearby house.
The Morgantown Fire Department is looking into these suspicious and dangerous actions. Stay with 5 News for more updates.
